Liberty crews prepared for winter storm; let’s weather it together
Water customers can take steps now to prevent their pipes from freezing

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – With the National Weather Service issuing a winter storm warning for the weekend, the Liberty team has been prepping for whatever Mother Nature sends our way. As water customers, there are steps you can take now to prepare as well – particularly when it comes to preventing pipes from freezing.

Water expands as it freezes, which can put pressure on metal or plastic pipes and can cause them to break. Pipes most likely to freeze are those that are exposed to severe cold (like outdoor hoses, sprinkler lines, and outdoor faucets), those located in unheated areas such as basements or attics, or that run near or within exterior walls with little to no insulation.

Before the winter storm arrives, Liberty encourages you to take these steps to help protect your pipes from freezing.

  • Know the location of your main water valve and how to shut it off in case freezing does occur.
  • Disconnect all garden hoses and drain any of the water that remains in outdoor faucets.
  • Check around your home for unheated areas where pipes or water lines are located. Heat tape can be used on pipes in these areas for a quick and affordable form of insulation.

  • Keep your home temperature set no lower than 55 degrees.

  • When temperatures dip below freezing, let cold water trickle from your faucets. Running water through the pipe, even at just a trickle, helps prevent them from freezing.

  • For longer-term protection, consider adding insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas.
