For Immediate Release

Joplin, Missouri – March 2, 2022 – On Thursday, March 3, beginning at 10 a.m., Liberty and Quails Forever will partner to hold a pollinator day of activities for Neosho’s George Washington Carver Elementary students beside the Liberty substation at the intersection of Zora and St. Louis St. in Joplin, Missouri.

During the pollinator day event, George Washington Carver students will learn about pollinators through hands-on activities. These include making pollinator seed balls and butterfly packets to take home and helping to seed an outdoor pollinator garden. Students will also watch a bee-keeping demonstration and learn how pollinators impact what they eat. Each activity has been designed by Liberty and Quails Forever to help educate students about the importance of pollinators.

In 2018, Liberty began implementing pollinator protection projects as part of their sustainability efforts. Liberty calls this initiative Power to the Pollinators. In addition to pollinator education opportunities, Liberty has planted over 60 acres of pollinator habitat in its electric service territory since the launch of Power to the Pollinators.

According to the USDA, three-fourths of the world's flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world's food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce.

“Hands-on pollinator education is a fun way to teach children about the importance of pollinators and how much they impact our lives,” said Jason Grossman, Manager - Vegetation Management, Liberty. “We hope that these students take what they learn home and form habits that are safe and beneficial to pollinators, whether it be planting a pollinator garden at home or even remembering that when they eat, the food was created because of a pollinator.”
