Liberty plans milestone event celebrating delivery of new generation units at historic Riverton Power Plant

Riverton, Kansas – Liberty will mark a major milestone in its long-term plan to modernize local power generation at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the historic Riverton Power Plant, 7240 SE Hwy. 66. The event will celebrate the delivery and installation progress of two new Siemens SGT-400 industrial natural gas generation units, which will replace two aging 1960s-era units that are no longer supported by the manufacturer.

The new dual-fuel units will significantly improve efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility – enhancements that benefit customers in Liberty’s Four State service area. Once operational, the units are expected to be 35–40% more efficient and will be capable of operating on liquid fuels during periods of high natural gas demand. They are also designed to support future innovation by operating on a blend of hydrogen and natural gas as hydrogen technology advances.

“The Riverton plant has served the region for nearly 120 years and remains central to Liberty’s electric operations in the Four State service area,” said Tim Wilson, President, Liberty Central Region-Electric. “It remains vital to our ability to serve our customers, and our investment in these generation units reaffirms our commitment to providing safe, reliable service for years to come.”

Construction preparation began earlier this year, including foundation work and installation of new underground utilities. A new transformer with an extended manufacturing lead time is expected to arrive in early 2026, with full testing and commercial operation of the new units targeted for late summer 2026.

The milestone event will include brief remarks from Liberty and project representatives. Media are invited to attend.

Safety Note: The Riverton Power Plant is an active industrial site. Closed-toe shoes are required. Additional safety gear will be provided.
