Liberty plans tree giveaway during annual May the Forest be with You event

JOPLIN, MISSOURI – Why does Yoda enjoy planting trees? Because he has a green thumb.

If you’re hoping to spruce up your landscaping this spring with a free tree, no Jedi mind tricks are needed. Liberty has once again teamed with the Wildcat Glades Nature Group, Joplin Parks & Recreation, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Chert Glades Missouri Master Naturalists to host May the Forest be With You from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in Wildcat Park, 301 W. Riviera Drive, Joplin.

The event will include special Arbor Day and Earth Day proclamations at 11 a.m., and families will have the opportunity to participate in fun activities (including a scavenger hunt with prizes), explore nature stations, enjoy live music, food trucks, demonstrations, and more.

The theme for the 2024 event is “Rise of the Natives vs. Attack of the Invasives.” It will spotlight the ongoing battle between native and invasive species, and the steps you can take to help native species win. Liberty has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to offer a native tree giveaway for those who want to join the fight. Available trees include Eastern Redbud, Flowering Dogwood, Kentucky Coffeetree, Sourwood, and Sugar Maple.

Not only can participants help boost native species but planting the right tree in the right place can also help save energy. Deciduous trees planted on the east or west side of the home can provide shade during hot summer months and allow sunlight to warm the house during the winter. Planting evergreen trees on the north side can provide a wind break from northerly winds during the cold winter months.

While supplies last, visit https://www.arborday.org/libertymo and reserve a free tree to pick up at the event.
