Liberty’s periodic aerial transmission-line inspection underway
Joplin, Missouri – Liberty’s periodic aerial inspection of electric transmission lines and substations has begun. Depending upon weather and wind conditions, the inspection is expected to run through the second week of August.
A low-flying helicopter (Tail #N38Q) is used to survey approximately 1,300 miles of transmission lines throughout Liberty’s electric service territory spanning through Southeast Missouri, Northwest Arkansas, Southwest Kansas, and Northwest Oklahoma. The focus is on identifying potential reliability issues with transmission structures, hardware, conductors, and vegetation. Using an infrared camera, an observer examines lines, connections, and substations to identify potential areas of concern.?
“It’s an efficient and effective way to assess our system for potential reliability issues,” says Jason Grossman, Liberty’s Manager of Vegetation Management. “The speed and coverage we achieve with a helicopter allows us to inspect our system to highlight areas to consider for improvements that could support continued high-quality service for our customers.”
