Listen up, Mr. Groundhog … you and your shadow got your extra weeks of winter. Now, it’s officially time to step into spring!
For those looking for some seasonal savings ideas, we have you covered.
- Swap out dirty air filters. Dirt that accumulates on filters can restrict airflow and may increase energy use.
- If you have a programmable thermostat, setting it can help you save if you’re going out for the day. Set the temperature a bit higher so you’re not wasting energy on cooling your empty house. Alternately, lower the temperature if you’re going out on a cold day in order to reduce heating costs.
- Planting a tree? Knowing the best place to plant it is another way to help reduce energy costs. Plant deciduous trees on the east or west side of your home to provide shade during the summer, and to allow sunlight to warm the house during the winter. Evergreen trees should be planted on the north side of your home to help provide a wind break during winter months.
- Check for leaks in your irrigation system or broken/clogged sprinkler heads. The best time to water your lawn is between 6-10 a.m. to help prevent evaporation.
- And while we have your attention: Always be prepared by creating an emergency preparedness kit containing items such as first-aid supplies, essential medications, bottled water, a flashlight, batteries, etc. Make sure your family has an emergency plan, including evacuation routes and a meeting place outside your home.
