A Trapper Keeper with a rad design? Ok, so maybe we’re dating ourselves here … but you get the idea!

As your kids head back to class, it’s a great time to refresh routines – and that includes how you use energy and water at home. Follow these tips for savings that will help you make the grade.

Electric Savings

Set a smart schedule with your thermostat. Program it to reduce heating/cooling when your house is empty during school hours. Smart thermostats can help you save up to 10% annually.

Switch to LED lighting. With shorter daylight hours on the horizon, you’ll rely more on indoor lighting. LEDs use much less energy and last much longer.

Unplug unused electronics. Laptops, chargers, gaming consoles, and other electronics can continue to pull energy even when turned off. Plug them into power strips to make shutting them off quick and easy.

Run appliances during off-peak hours. Waiting to run the dishwasher or do laundry until nighttime when there’s lower demand will reduce the strain on our power grid.

Gas Savings

Lower your water-heater temperature. Set it to 120°F instead of the default 140°F to save on heating costs.

Seal drafts and insulate. With fall on the way, it’s a great time to check for leaks around windows and doors. Weatherstripping and caulking can help reduce heating needs.

Be more efficient when cooking. Whether you’re preparing dinner or school lunches, be sure to use lids on pots and match the burner size to pan size to reduce gas usage.

Water Savings

Use cold water for laundry. Back-to-school means more laundry – gym clothes, band uniforms, etc. Washing with cold water helps to save energy and reduce wear on clothes.

Fix leaks promptly. A dripping faucet or running toilet can waste thousands of gallons every year. Quick fixes can equal big savings. Check out these tips from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Use your dishwasher efficiently. Modern dishwashers are already designed to be more water efficient. Skip the pre-rinse and be sure to run a full load (guys, pretend the dishwasher is a puzzle and that your wife is judging your every move ... because she is).
