Plant the right tree in the right place with Liberty’s annual tree giveaway
Giveaway to coincide with annual Star Wars-themed Arbor/Earth Day event
Joplin, Missouri – Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. Luke Skywalker is looking to up his landscaping game but isn’t sure how to acquire a tree. He summons the ghost of Obi Wan Kenobi and asks, “Master, how can I get a tree to plant?” Obi Wan thinks for a moment and replies, “Use the Forest, Luke.” No Jedi mind tricks are needed to register for a free tree, courtesy of Liberty and the Arbor Day Foundation. Anyone – whether a Liberty customer or not – can sign up to receive a tree by clicking here. Trees can be picked up during the annual May the Forest Be With You event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in Joplin’s Wildcat Park. The annual event is sponsored by the Wildcat Glades Nature Group, Joplin Parks & Recreation, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Chert Glades chapter of the Missouri Master Naturalists. In addition to Liberty’s tree giveaway, the event will include nature stations, activities, live music, demonstrations and more as a celebration of both Arbor Day and Earth Day. The available species this year are: Eastern Redbud, White Dogwood, Red Maple, Pecan, and Ann Magnolia. If planted in the right place, trees can help lower energy costs, create a wildlife habitat, and grow healthier neighborhoods. The species selected are mostly compatible with power lines, as well as shade trees for energy efficiency, says Jason Grossman, Liberty Manager of Vegetation Management. “The annual tree giveaway is a chance to educate the public about the Arbor Day Foundation’s Right Tree in the Right Place program,” says Grossman. Deciduous trees that are planted on the east or west side of the home can provide shade during the summertime and allow sunlight to warm the house during winter, he says. Evergreen trees planted on the north side can serve as wind break in winter. Trees will be available while supplies last, so register today!
