The gray myotis (or gray bat) is the largest of all Missouri's myotis (mouse-eared) bats. Its key identifying feature are its wings, which attach to the ankle rather than the base of the toes. Identified as endangered by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Fish and Wildlife Service, gray bats once flourished in limestone caves, especially those within two miles of rivers, streams or lakes. Efforts to conserve the species include protecting the bats' wintering and nursery caves, reducing the use of pesticides, and maintaing thewooded corridors along streams.
