What Should I Do if I Smell Natural Gas?

Most people are familiar with the distinctive "pungent odor" aroma added to natural gas. It’s often compared to sulfur or rotten eggs. If you smell gas in your home, or suspect a gas leak, call us right away.

If You Smell Gas, Please Follow These Steps:

  • Check to be sure your range and oven controls are turned off. DO NOT turn off the gas supply to any appliances.
  • Don't operate electrical appliances or switches. This can cause sparks.
  • Do not use lighters or matches and do not smoke.
  • Leave immediately.  Instruct others to leave.
  • When you arrive at a safe location, call the Liberty emergency number, 1-800-206-2300 (Electric & Water) 1-800-406-9220 (Gas), or dial 911 from a mobile phone or neighbor’s phone. Dial 711 if you are hearing impaired. Don’t send an email.
  • Be sure to tell us the exact street location and cross streets. We're here 365 days a year to serve you. We'll be there as soon as possible to make sure that the situation is safe.

If You Suspect a Leak Inside Your Home or Business:

  • DO NOT open doors or windows in an attempt to ventilate. Instruct others to leave and evacuate the premises immediately. Close the door behind you.
  • Do not use electrical switches, telephones, appliances, garage door opener, etc.
  • Do not use lighters or matches and do not smoke.
  • DO NOT turn off your gas meter. This valve should only be operated by a qualified technician.
  • When you arrive at a safe location, call Liberty immediately at 1-800-206-2300 (Electric & Water) 1-800-406-9220 (Gas).   

If You Suspect a Leak Outside Your Home or Business:

  • Leave your location immediately.
  • When you arrive at a safe location, call Liberty immediately at 1-800-206-2300 (Electric & Water) 1-800-406-9220 (Gas).  
  • Keep clear of the area.
  • Do not start any motors or motor vehicles near the area of the gas odor.
  • Do not use lighters or matches and do not smoke.
