Smart Meter Opt Out for Missouri Customers

Smart meters are a secure, modern upgrade and one of many ways Liberty is investing in reliable, advanced technology for our customers. Although they offer greater visibility and control over your energy usage, some customers can choose to opt out in favor of manual meter readings.

Your right to opt out

In accordance with Missouri statute section 386.820, effective July 1, 2026, Missouri residential customers may request to opt out of using an advanced (smart) meter. If you choose to opt out, a Non-Standard Meter will replace your current Standard Meter.

Benefits of smart meters

Before opting out, consider what you’ll miss:

  • Electric customers: Access to view hourly usage data through My Account to better understand your usage habits
  • Automated, hassle free, meter reading
  • Faster troubleshooting and issue resolution with equipment or services

If you opt out

With a Non-Standard Meter:

  • You will be charged a set-up fee and a monthly fee per meter
  • Meter readings are not automatic; a Liberty employee will need to access your property to manually read your meter, or you can elect to self-read and submit your meter read monthly
  • Some My Account features and tools will not be available
  • Interest may be charged if self-read customers fail to report usage or provide inaccurate information

Opt-out charges

 

  • One-time setup charge – per Non-Standard meter = $125
  • Monthly Non-Standard Meter Charge – per meter = $15

How to opt out

  1. Review the information above
  2. Complete the opt-out request form
  3. Submit the form with payment
  4. We will replace your meter
  5. If you have elected to self-read your meter, a member of our Customer Care team will contact you once the meter has been exchanged and inform you of your next meter read date
